MATSUBARA, Nobuo.
Nagaita Chugata

The beauty in the contrast of indigo and white.
Stencil dyed kimonos are their finest.

Matsubara Nobuo was born in Edogawa City, Tokyo, in 1965. His grandfather, Matsubara Sadakichi, had been decorated as a Living National Treasure in the field of Nagaita-Chugata. His sons are known as the "Four Matsubara Brothers," and Nobuo is the son of Matsubara Toshio.

After graduating from high school, Nobuo Matsubara studied under his father Toshio, who is also a regular member of the Japan Crafts Association, and has won numerous awards at many dyeing and weaving exhibitions. His current studio is located in Kimitsu City, Chiba Prefecture, where he moved to when he was 19 years old. Here in his studio surrounded by nature, he dyes his masterpieces by hand, ensuring the future of his craft.

Nagaita-Chugata is one of many stencil dyeing techniques used in kimono making. This technique become popular in the Edo period  and was often used in dyeing Yukata, though now is used to dye silk as well as cotton.

The fabric is stretched over a single 6.5 meter long board, a hand cut stencil of persimmon dyed paper is placed on top, and dye-proof paste is applied to both sides of the fabric. The pasted fabric is then dunked in a bath of natural indigo dye. The fabric is then washed, removing the paste, and leaving behind a beautifully fine pattern in white and blue.

Matsubara's Nobuo use of real indigo, his stylish selection of stencils, are popular both in Japan and abroad.
