Tabata Collection August Exhibition: A Mid-Edo Furisode from the Vaults

A furisode from the Tabata Collection - Mid Edo Period (c. 1700-1750) with a pattern of Pine, Bamboo, Plum, Cypress Fans, and Calligraphic Motifs.

The Tabata family has been hand dyeing kimono since the Edo period, producing garments for women in the highest social circles. Always at the forefront of their craft, the family has developed its own distinctive aesthetic, each generation slightly different.

For this special exhibition, Tabata Kihachi V, has generously lent a very special kimono from the Tabata Collection from the mid-Edo period.

As well as being able to view this historic garment, Tabata-sensei has designed a new obi based on the kimono. Newly dyed pieces from his popular komon collection will also be presented, together with obi featuring Kyoto vegetable motifs.

We invite you to discover how this exceptional beauty has been carried forward and renewed, from the Edo period to the present day.
