渡辺智子

岐阜県可児市生まれ。1996年、旅先のインドネシアでバティック（ジャワ更紗）と出会い、大学在学中に日本でその基礎を学びます。2000年、大学卒業と同時にインドネシア国立ガジャマダ大学へ留学し、現地のバティック職人に教えを請いました。その後もインドネシアを中心にアジア各国のテキスタイルを訪ねる旅を重ね、2012年からはバティック教室やワークショップを開始。2025年、20年間勤めた会社を退職し、制作活動に専念されています。

図案から蝋置き、染めまでの全工程を自らの手で行い、身近な植物や旅先、植物園などで出会った草花を主なモチーフに制作。日本の柔らかな風景になじむ穏やかな色合いと余白を大切にし、チャンティンで一本一本描かれる線には、手仕事ならではのゆらぎが宿ります。ジャワ更紗の技法を礎にしながら、日本で暮らす自身の感性を重ねた、やわらかく楽しげな表情の帯を生み出しています。

WATANABE, Tomoko

Born in Kani City, Gifu Prefecture, Japan, Tomoko Watanabe discovered batik, the traditional wax-resist textile art of Java, while travelling in Indonesia in 1996. While still at university, she began learning the basic techniques in Japan. After graduating in 2000, she studied at Gadjah Mada University in Indonesia and learned directly from local batik artisans. She continued to travel throughout Asia, especially Indonesia, exploring the region’s rich textile traditions. In 2012, she began teaching batik classes and workshops. In 2025, after working for a company for twenty years, she left her job to devote herself fully to her art.

Inspired by flowers and plants found near her home, on her travels and in botanical gardens, Watanabe creates the designs, draws them in wax with a traditional tool called a canting, and dyes the cloth. The gentle variations in her hand-drawn lines give each piece warmth and character. Rooted in Javanese batik and shaped by her life in Japan, her obi are known for their soft colours, open space and joyful expression.
