Gallery Izumi

Ginza Motoji's Mission
Gallery Izumi

The wind under the wings of the next generation of dyers and weavers,
We want to share the passion and talent of these craftspeople with the world.

The word Izumi 泉 can be translated into English as a spring or fountain. It is also the first character in the name Motoji. 泉二
In 2017, Gallery Izumi was established to support the creative endeavors of the new generation of kimono makers. We strive to support the emerging artisans, who we see as a fountain of creativity.

At Gallery Izumi we provide space for the artisans to showcase their works here in Ginza. It is a precious opportunity for the makers to meet the customers face to face, and to share their mutual love of kimono
The support of each and every customer is what propels these craftspeople, ensuring the future of the weaving and dying traditions.

What is Gallery Izumi?

Between the doors of the women's kimono specialty stores "Waori" and "Wasen", there is another door labeled "Gallery Izumi".
"Gallery Izumi" has been a longtime dream of the owner, Koumei Motoji, who has seen many talented weavers leave the dyeing and weaving world because they were not given the opportunity to show their works. Gallery Izumi was created to shine a light on promising makers in the Japanese textile dyeing and weaving industry and to provide them with a place to showcase their works.
The dream became a reality, and the first solo exhibition was held in 2017.
With the support of customers, the artists who took their first steps as dyers and weavers have been steadily expanding their fields of activity since then.

What we can do
Our goal is not just to present the works of these artists, but also to enabled them to make a living via dyeing and weaving. We wish to demonstrate customers that these kimono are not only works of art, but also pieces of clothing that can be worn in the modern world.

On the premise that the creator has accumulated skills and can continue to make sincere efforts, the creator who is selected to hold a solo exhibition at Gallery Izumi will work with our Cultural Planning Office to create a work to be presented at the exhibition.

We see these exhibition as an opportunity for us and the maker to listen to the customers, to deepen our understanding of the art of dressing, to go beyond simply "attractive works of art" to create new expressions of works that can be beautifully worn, and to gain inspiration for the next stage of their creative process.

We are looking for creators who are aware and determined to make dyeing and weaving their life's work, and who have the spirit to pursue their dreams together, motivated by the smiles of customers when they see their creations.
