As Worn by Ginza Motoji Staff:
Men-Satsuma
With as few as 10 bolts of this fabric produced a year, Men-Satsuma is an extremely rare and coveted kimono.
Made with many of the same techniques as Oshima-Tsumugi, including shimebata and hand weaving, these painstakingly handcrafted kimono are often called "The Diamond of Cotton".
Men-Satsuma is truly a favorite of both customers and staff members alike, due to its versatility and comfort. Coordinated with obi from different sakka and sanchi from all over Japan, let us show you some of the ways you can enjoy their versatility.
"I had my Men-Satsuma tailored into a Hitoe kimono, therefore I can wear it as the days heat up before the summer, and as it cools down before autumn.
My favorite part about this kimono is how it just melts into the skin and is so pleasant to wear. Of course you can wear it with a silk obi, but i decided to keep it all cotton and paired my favorite piece by Tsuiki Noriko. It reminds me of ripples in the surface of water, and feels cool and fresh."

"I fell in love with this kimono at first sight. I have paired it with my beloved Kokura-Ori obi by Tsuiki Noriko, it really brings out the graphic yet delicate kasuri that make up this geometric pattern. I softened the look up a bit with a bright obi-age and obi-jime.
I usually dress quiet monotone, even when I wear kimono, so i feel relaxed in this look. I often spend my free time going to art museums to see the latest exhibits, therefore i usually end up wearing my kimono all day. I'm always surprised by how comfortable it is and how I am not in a hurry to take it off when I arrive home."

"This Men-Satsuma was dyed with real Indigo, giving it this deep rich blue. I have paired it with an obi by the renowned weaver Uehara Michiko. This kimono just back from the tailor, its my first time wearing it!
The elaborate kasuri is truly stunning, and it is just so soft and cool to wear. As it is cotton, it has a supple hand and a matte texture. It really is different to every other kimono I have worn before.
The season for wearing hitoe kimono has become longer and longer, so its important to have a kimono that can see you through the seasons"

"I have put together this look with autumn in mind. The autumn in Japan is still considerably warm, so i have opted for a lighter hassun obi as opposed to a kyusun obi.
I have been wearing this kimono for over 10 years now. Just last year I had it taken apart and retailored to match my current measurements. The fact that it's just so hardwearing is also a big plus for me."

"The first time I wore Men-Satsuma, I was really surprised at how comfortable it was. When I am getting dressed, it lays just right. Moreso than every other kimono I have, I can really just relax and forget that I am wearing it.
This kimono is a dark indigo blue, and it's so easy to pair with many different obi. Despite the dark color, the pattern is quite cute and playful, made up of squares and circles."

"The Diamond of Cotton is what I call it. Using such thin threads the fabric has such an unbelievably soft and light hand. Today I am wearing a pattern called Hyaku-RokuJu-Kiko. Kiko is a common pattern in mens kimono, but in the one I am wearing is particularly fine. I have paired it with am indigo dyed turfan cotton obi by the fantastic Fukumoto Shihoko. Pairing cotton with cotton is always a good idea.

"I originally chose this kimono for the pattern. I have been wearing it about six years now. I am wearing it with an obi by Yamazaki Hiroki. I love how modern it feels, with the natural brushstroke like pattern against a almost geometric background. Whenever rain is forecast, this is always the first kimono that comes to mind. I also usually wear it if I'm heading out for a casual dinner or to go for drinks with friends. It's pretty hard wearing and I suppose that's one of the reasons I wear it a lot."

"I have paired my inky black Men-Satsuma with an obi by Kan Takahashi. The fine check pattern adds some visual interest but doesn't feel busy. Usually< I would not match a dyed silk obi like this with a cotton kimono, but Men-Satsuma feels almost dressy enough, so I think it looks good.
I have gotten so much wear out of this kimono, and after washing it a few times it becomes softer, and the black deepened into a more nuanced, almost purple hued black."
