Brilliantly white,
The silk thread of dreams.
“Platinum Boy” is the name of the silkworm variety exclusively sold at Ginza Motoji. In 2007, after 37 years of research, a new silkworm breed was born. Platinum boy is produced domestically and only by male silk worms.
The name “Platinum Boy" is used as the threads are strikingly white, and are only produced by the male silkworm. Today, Platinum Boy is a symbol of Ginza Motoji’s dedication to craft
The fabric woven with these fantastically thin, white, strong, shiny, and smooth threads drapes gracefully, does not wrinkle easily, takes dye beautifully, and even woven into a kimono, its brilliance can be felt.
Dr. Akio Onuma, a researcher in silkworms, silkworm farming, thread spinning, and weaving in partnered with Ginza Motoji, undertaking a project with “face to face” manufacturing. Each bold of Platinum Boy silk has the name of everyone involved in the process, from the researchers, thread spinners, and the weavers.
In 2015 we received the "Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries" Award as well as the "Japan Agricultural, Forestry and Fishery Development Association Chairman's Award.” We received high praise from the government for the outstanding quality of our product.
Japan was the world's largest exporter of raw silk until the end of the 20th century. Despite this, the current self-sufficiency rate is less then one 1%, with a majority of silk coming from overseas. One of our goals here at Ginza Motoji is to help revive the Japanese sericulture industry, and to have our national dress produced start to finish locally.
We would like to pass on the this silk culture to the next generation, and we feel that this dream is entrusted to the pure domestic silk Platinum Boy.
