一本一本の糸の質感を生かした組織の煌き。
さり気なくも、細部に驚異が織りなされた美しさ。
1948年佐賀県唐津市生まれ。女子美術大学で織物と出会い、在学中から柳悦孝氏のもとで染めや織りの基礎を習得。卒業後は柳悦孝氏の紹介で、弟である悦博氏のもとで糸作りから学ばれます。糸の精練から染め、図案や織り、仕上げにいたるまでを手がけ、複数枚の綜絖から生まれる浮織、花織、綾織、つづれ風織などの表情豊かな作品は、さり気なく、何気なく、軽やかな魅力を放ちながら、見れば見るほど細部に驚異の技術と感性が織りなされています。光を帯びた模様の繊細な煌きと、多色使いの中に際立つ白場の深い風合い。「基本を学んだら後は自分で勉強するだけ」と、謙虚で誠実なものづくりの中で、特に糸の素材の持つ美しさを引き出すことを大切にされ、作品によっては撚りや精練の具合を変化させた数種類の糸を用いることも。また、大学時代より故郷唐津に伝わる「佐志葛布」の復元・伝承にも取り組まれています。

Each thread is brought together to create a shimmering harmony,

A beauty that is subtle, but wonders are woven into the details.


Born in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture in 1948, Matsuo Kyoko first encountered weaving

at Joshibi University of Art and Design, and learned the basics of dyeing and weaving under Yanagi Yoshitaka while still in school.

After graduation, Yanagi introduced him to his younger brother, Etsuhiro Yanagi, where she learned how to prepare and dye thread, and weave many different techniques such as uki-ori, hana-ori, twill weave, and tzuzure weave. These techniques all require a multiple heddle loom, in turn creating light and airy textiles. Due to the floating threads woven into the textiles, the light catches beautifully, especially when pure white is woven among richly dyed threads

Matsuo places importance on bringing out the beauty in the silk threads themselves, using multiple types of threads with various thickness and varying degrees of twisting.

On top of her regular creations Matsuo is also involved in the restoration of Sashi Kuzufu, a type of weaving from her hometown Karatsu.
