菊池洋守さんは2019年3月に永眠されました。極上の無地。そう言葉にしたくなる上質な美しさを奏でる菊池洋守さんの八丈織。 綾織特有の文様が生地に淡く浮かび、品良い光の陰影は、目を見張る美しさです。 いわゆる黄八丈の伝統的な染織技法にとらわれることなく、独自の世界観、染織技法を生み出されました。1940年東京都八丈島生まれ。中学を卒業後、染織家 故・柳悦博さんに師事され、内弟子として7年間修業の後独立し、1962年八丈島に工房を開設。悦博さんの縁から白洲正子さんとも交流があり、白洲さんの店「こうげい」でも作品が取り扱われ、白洲さんご自身も好んで菊池洋守さんの作品をお召しになられていたと言います。 菊池洋守さんの作る光沢感のある無地紬は美しい華やぎがあり、現代のきものシーンでもすっきりと都会的に着こなせると高い支持を集めています。

The finest solids and stripes, with the very so slightly visible twill pattern.
Hachijo that feels contemporary and feels at home in the cityscape.


Often without pattern, or just the simplest of stripes, Kikuchi Hiromori weaves using the Hachijo techniques to produce the highest quality silks.  The unique twill weave pattern appears and disappears faintly on the surface of the fabric as they move between light and shadow.

Kikuchi Hiromori was born in 1940 on Hachijo Island, Tokyo. Graduating from junior high school, he then studied under the late weaving master Yoshihiro Yanagi. After seven years of training as an apprentice, he became independent and opened his own studio on Hachijojima in 1962.  Shirasu Masako, the owner of a store “Kogei” stocked his works at her store. Shirasu liked his work so much she often wore it herself, and therefore became highly sought after on the kimono scene for its simplicity and elegance.

Kikuchi Hiromori passed away in March 2019.
