TAMAHANA,Yuko.
Bingata

Born in Ishigaki City, Okinawa, in 1936, Tamanaha studied under Eiki Shiroma, the 14th generation of the Shiroma family. The Shiroma family are one of the three main Ryukyu Bingata families as well as the Chinen, and Tsukushi families.

At 34 years old, he exhibited his work for the first time at a public exhibition launching him to become a leading figure in the world of Ryukyu Bingata. In 1996, at the age of 60, he was certified as a Living National Treasure in the field of Bingata.

Bingata began in a quiet corner of Yomitan Village, and despite hundreds of years of history, always feels fresh and new. The Bingata techniques Tamanaha has acquired over the past half century have been further sharpened, and the world created by Tamanaha's hands never ceases to captivate the viewers.
