Yanagi Shinya, the great grand newphew of Yanagi Muneyoshi, continues the family legacy. Shinya is a celebrated dyer and weaver, and his work is wildly popular. He held his first exhibition in Ginza Motoji in 2021, and will hold his second this April at Ginza Motoji

Based on the foundation of the Yanagi family's dyeing and weaving traditions, Shinya Yanagi has been crafting textiles with a focus on thread, deeply contemplating the relationship between warp and weft threads, establishing his own style.

" Shinya speaks of Mingei (folk crafts) as "the energy of handwork." Please take a look at the new collection, which was born from interactions with the production regions, including new lengths of fabric for kimono, nine-inch belts, summer belts, wide fabric lengths, and square belts.

Yanagi Shinya at a Glance

Continuing on his family traditions of weaving,
Yanagi skillfully balances the traditional techniques and a contemporary sense of style.

Shinya Yanagi has comes from a well known lineage of great craftspeople and thinkers. He is the great grand nephew of Yanagi Muneyoshi (Soetsu), the father of the folk-art movement, and his own father, Yanagi Sou, was a renowned weaver.
After studying interior design and working for an architectural firm, Yanagi Shinya entered the "Yanagi Dyeing and Weaving Studio," ran by his father, the second-generation owner, and began her career in dyeing and weaving.

After two years learning the ins and outs of weaving and dyeing, he exhibited work under his own name at the Japanese Folk Art Exhibition.

In 2019, he received the Japan Folk Art Exhibition Encouragement Prize, and in 2021, he became independent.
Mingei is "the energy of handcraft," he says. While the creation of thread and the weaving of fabric is in his DNA, he stands out with his truly contemporary sensibilities which result in incredibly fresh work.
