YAMASHITA, Fumiko.
Kihachijo

Kihachijo fascinates those who wear it with its unique luster and deeply hued colors. From the buttery yellows, the earthly browns, to the deepest of blacks, Kihachijo radiates a quiet elegance.
The Yamashita family have been weaving Kihachijo on Hachijo Island for generations. Yamashita Fumiko, the fourth generation of the family, has taken over the Yamashita Meyu Studio, which was established by her mother. Yamashita Yaoko who had studied under Etsuhiro Yanagi.

Backed by tradition, Yamashita produces spectacular kimono that stand out beautifully against the various greys of the contemporary city.
Kihachijo was designated an intangible cultural asset by the Tokyo Metropolitan government in 1948.
